Intense and concentrated, almost syrupy. The core wild berry, blackberry, boysenberry, mint and beef scents give it plenty of flavor complexity, and it’s focused, with a long, persistent aftertaste. Ripe tannins give it a smooth aftertaste.

The 2001 Syrah Eddie’s Patch (360 cases) is a blockbuster effort from this hillside vineyard. One-hundred percent destemmed, and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it boasts a roasted meat, charcoal-infused, blackberry-scented nose with hints of violets in the background. Dense, full-bodied, and super-rich as well as gorgeously pure with chocolatey, herbal undertones, it needs 1-2 years of cellaring, and should last for 10-12 years. – Robert M. Saturated purple. Exotically perfumed bouquet of red and dark berry preserves, smoked meat, potpourri and black olive. Textbook syrah on the palate, offering sweet raspberry, cassis, candied violet and smoky mineral flavors and a late note of chewing tobacco. Becomes livelier with air and finishes with excellent clarity and lingering mineral and smoke notes. This was fermented with one-third whole clusters.
