For the production of this Reserva the best grapes from the oldest vineyards are hand harvested. Following the harvest the best bunches are selected in the winery. The grapes then udergo a slow and controlled alcoholic fermentation with periodic pumping over to extract colour and aromas. Following this the wine remains in French oak barrels for 26 months. – Producer’s website
This harmonious red is dense and lively, with plum, licorice, smoke and mineral flavors supported by moderate tannins and fresh acidity. Not assertive, but with enough drive to carry it through the floral finish. —T.M.
The 2006 Gran Reserva shows the effect of a ripe vintage, with notes of prunes and dark plums and as a result of the long aging in oak there are balsamic notes of incense and old furniture. The palate reveals plenty of tannins with the fruit in the background.
Ruby-red. Ripe cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complemented by nuances of woodsmoke, pipe tobacco and vanilla, with a hint of peppery spices adding lift. Sweet and velvety on the palate, offering sappy red and dark berry flavors and suggestions of vanilla bean and mocha. This round, seamless Rioja finishes with very good cling, fully integrated tannins and lingering smoke and spice notes.
