Castello Romitorio, a massive twelfth-century hilltop fortress in Montalcino, since 1986 has produced exquisite Tuscan wines, grappa, and olive oil in the best traditions of the region. After acquiring the estate in 1984, artist Sandro Chia spent the next several years restoring Castello Romitorio and transforming its lands into vineyards. He promptly constructed a cellar on the castle’s ground floor with the most advanced equipment available, with keen respect, though, for ancient techniques.
The meaning of Romito del Romitorio is the ‘Hermit of the Hermitage’. This wine is the first ever produced by Castello Romitorio, in 1986. 60% Sangiovese Grosso, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Canaiolo Nero and aged 14 months in oak casks. This wine has been sitting in a temperature controlled warehouse since it’s release and it is drinking really, really well right now. Its particular and well-balanced earth-notes represent a distinct expression of the Montalcino terroir: silky and quite velvety, chocolate and tar characteristics blending with dried fruit, juniper berry, and ripe, red fruit spices, together with round, full tannins, solid acidity, and a long, spicy finish.
“One of my favorite estates in Montalcino”- Monica Larner, Wine Advocate
