Description

Chianti Classico San Lorenzo takes its name from the lovely valley that is home to the 18th-century Pianigiani and Ricucci villas. The wine is made entirely with grapes from Castello di Ama vineyards, which are all old plantings or plots planted over a decade ago, and which show the most mature, rounded extracts at time of harvest. The Gran Selezione label was a significant step for the Chianti Classico designation, representing the top of the quality pyramid. Wines in this category are a guarantee for the consumer, in terms of origin and of quality. The production protocol states that all grapes must be produced by the winery itself and the wine goes on sale 30 months from harvest.

Pure ruby-red color. Fruity aromas with cherry and strawberry notes. Some tertiary hints remind of leather. On the palate there are flavors of ripened red fruits, succulent, intriguing and long-lasting. Tannins are ripen and delicate. The 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo flaunts its importance. It boasts confidence and an outward-looking personality that comes as a refreshing surprise. Like all Gran Selezione wines, it is released 30 months after January 1st following the harvest. That means it still has a few more months to go before it hits the market. This expression of Sangiovese shows depth and power with ripe fruit tones of cherry and forest berry. Like many of the other high profile wines I preview-tasted from the difficult 2014 vintage, I am delighted and surprised by the elegant and soft nature of the mature tannins. The wine’s finish offers bright freshness with layers of dark fruit, wet earth and forest floor.

Ama’s 2014 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo is one of the successes of this very challenging vintage. Then again, Ama did not bottle their flagship Casuccia and Bellavista Chianti Classicos. Instead, all of the best fruit went into the San Lorenzo. A dark, rich wine, the 2014 possesses notable depth and persistence. Black cherry, plum, mocha, leather and spice notes give the wine its signature dark profile. At the same time, there is more than enough freshness to support a number of years of very fine drinking. The flavors are a bit forward, so I would not wait too long on the 2014.
