“This is a wonderful occasion to savour a great wine.Admirable light golden colour. Intense and elegant aromas come to the fore : hawthorn, apricot notes, evolving towards hints of blond tobacco. As the wine ages, there are nuances of dried fruit and rare spices. A silky texture and a subtle touch of tannin give a true personality to the wine. Remarkable aftertaste. A great white Burgundy!”. –Winemaker’s Notes
The 2014 Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot Marquis de Laguiche was picked between September 16 and 19, and is whole cluster fruit, spending 14 months in oak barrels. It has a very seductive bouquet with a hint of licorice in the background, detailed and gaining intensity in the glass. The palate is very well defined, harmonious on the entry with bitter lemon and orange zest. There is compelling energy here — this Chassagne just flows across the mouth and the finish is so vivid. By far and away, this is the best Chassagne-Morgeot that I have tasted from Marquis de Laguiche/Drouhin. –Neal Martin, Nov 2015
A completely different aromatic profile is present here with its smoky array of earth, resin and various white orchard fruit scents. On the palate it’s immediately clear that this is a big wine with impressive mid-palate concentration and overt power that continues onto the mouth coating and balanced finish that is very solidly structured. This won’t win any awards for elegance but it absolutely avoids the heaviness that Morgeot can often display. Moderate patience required.
(from clay and iron soil in “real” Morgeot, says Philippe Drouhin): Musky aromas and flavors of lime zest, anise and exotic melon. Suave and silky in the mouth, with attractive sweetness nicely balanced by ripe acidity. Finishes tactile and long, with lovely salinity and lift.
