“Great finesse and breed in this wine. The colour, barely golden, is brilliant. On the nose, refined aromas of hawthorn, fresh almond and apricot, evolving towards candied fruit, hazelnut and grilled dried fruit. On the palate, a beautiful structure harmonizing nicely with fresh and velvety sensations. Long aftertaste, especially in the flavours”. –Winemaker’s Notes
The 2014 Puligny Montrachet 1Er Cru Clos de la Garenne, which was still in cask, has a faint hint of butterscotch and almond on the nose, reticent at first but opening with some conviction with aeration. The palate is fresh on the entry with bitter lemon, Granny Smith apples and a keen line of acidity. This actually puts the Meursault Perrières into a hat — a really superb Puligny from Drouhin, with a killer saline aftertaste.
A slightly more elegant and clearly more complex nose speaks of white flower, lemon, pear and discreet sandalwood nuances. There is excellent intensity and plenty of minerality to the gorgeously textured, sappy and energetic medium-bodied flavors that also possess a wonderfully refined mouth feel on the balanced, long and classy finale. Good stuff that should amply reward up to a decade of cellaring.
