Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2014 tasting, Sérafin’s 2014 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Fonteny has a feisty, vivacious bouquet with hints of blueberry and cassis filtering through the red fruit. It is quite high-toned, but it has an attractive effervescent quality. The palate is well balanced, quite oaky, although that is integrated with the fruit, dovetailing into a spicy, animal, almost Rhône-like finish. If you like a bold Gevrey-Chambertin then this is the ticket—not the style I would personally seek but well made and enjoyable for what it is. Tasted September 2017. – Neal Martin – 31-10-2017
