Hamm sits closer to the village of Winningen. It is comprised of Devonian slate site with clay and quartzite. The wines here are usually a touch lighter in body and tend to drink a bit earlier. 1500L were fermented in steel and 500L were fermented in Acacia barrels, which Matthias is gradually adding back into the cellar. It shows white peach, mint, wintergreen and cayenne pepper. With just 6 grams residual sugar, it is a near perfect dry Mosel riesling. -Winemaker’s Notes
From blue slate with a bit of quartzite and gray slate, the 2015 (Winninger) Hamm Riesling is a dry white with pretty intense and ripe fruit aromas intertwined with pure slate and some lemon aromas. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied yet mouth-filling, round and juicy but also piquant and slatey Riesling with ripe fruit flavors, lovely purity and stimulating lightness and salinity. No need to wait here, but there’s a lot of benefit if you do. -Stephan Reinhardt (02/28/2017)
Very attractive dried peach character. Quite powerful and textural wine with a very clean finish. Delicious now or any time until 2023. -James Suckling (06/07/2017)
Fresh lime and Bosc pear tinged with thyme and basil mingle with satisfyingly earthy raw winter squash for a fascinating aromatic and flavor display. Luscious fruitiness, along with a cooling sense of green herbs, is perfectly showcased by the polished, silken-textured palate, leading to a soothingly sustained, persistently juicy but dry finish transparent to stony nuances. Even more so than with this year’s Pinot Blanc, the subtle effects of acacia casks seem to dovetail perfectly with the wine’s native herbal profile and textural refinement. Drinking window: 2017 – 2026. -David Schildknecht (06/2017)
