How Light Affects Wine and How Professional Storage Can Protect Your Collection

Ever wondered how UV and visible light affects wine? Learn how professional wine storage shields your collection from light damage.

When collectors think about wine storage, temperature and humidity tend to dominate the conversation. These are critical factors, no question, but there’s a third variable that receives far less attention. One that can cause just as much damage to fine wine without ever being detected until you open a bottle that should have been spectacular and find something flat, stripped, and lifeless. That variable? Light.

At The Wine Cellarage, light protection is one of the core pillars of how we designed and operate our storage facilities. Both of our 22,000-square-foot New York location in the Bronx and our newer 8,000-square-foot facility in Stratford, Connecticut. Understanding why matters if you care about what happens to your wine between now and the day you open it.

How Light Affects Wine and Causes Potential Damage

Wine is photosensitive. The compounds that give wine its aroma, flavor, and aging potential (polyphenols, thiols, certain amino acids) react when exposed to light, particularly ultraviolet (UV) light and the shorter wavelengths of the visible spectrum. The resulting chemical reactions are collectively described in the wine world as “light strike” or, in French, goût de lumière — literally, “the taste of light.”

The most studied form of light strike affects sparkling wines and white wines more dramatically than reds, primarily because red wines have higher levels of phenolic compounds that offer some natural protection. In wines like Champagne, Chablis, Pouilly-Fumé, and white Burgundy, light-induced oxidation can transform what should be a vibrant, mineral, expressive wine into something flat, rubbery, and stripped of complexity. The damage can occur faster than most people expect.

Significant light strike can develop in as little as a few hours of exposure to strong artificial or natural light.

It Isn’t Just UV — Artificial Light Causes Damage Too

There is a widespread belief that standard incandescent or LED lighting is safe for wine because it lacks the UV wavelengths associated with the most severe light strike. This is only partially true. While UV light is the most damaging part of the spectrum, visible light in the violet and blue range (approximately 370–450 nm) can still cause photochemical reactions in wine over time, particularly with extended exposure.

Fluorescent lights, the kind you find in many commercial spaces, warehouses, and even some wine storage facilities, emit a meaningful amount of UV radiation and are among the worst offenders for wine storage. If you’ve ever stored wine in a brightly lit basement or rack near a window, even for a few months, light damage is a real possibility.

Quality wine storage should minimize all light exposure — not just ultraviolet, but continuous artificial light of any kind.

How Bottle Color Helps (and Its Limits)

Wine producers are aware of light sensitivity, which is why the vast majority of serious wine is bottled in dark glass. The deep green or amber bottles associated with Bordeaux, Burgundy, Champagne, Riesling, and others are not aesthetic choices, they’re protective ones. Dark glass filters a meaningful portion of UV and visible short-wave light.

But dark glass is not a complete solution as it only filters, doesn’t block completely. A bottle of Champagne stored in a brightly lit display case for weeks is still accumulating light exposure. A bottle of white Burgundy on a brightly lit restaurant shelf, even in dark glass, is being compromised every day. The bottle is a first line of defense, not a guarantee.

This is why professional storage, kept dark without exception, is so important for wines you intend to age or collect seriously.

What Light Protection Means at The Wine Cellarage

Our storage facilities are designed around a simple principle: your wine should spend its time in the dark. Both our New York and Connecticut facilities maintain light protection as a core feature of the storage environment. Alongside light protection, our facilities also offer regulated temperature (maintained at a consistent 55°F), controlled humidity, and protection from vibration.

To us, this isn’t a feature. It’s an active design choice reflected in everything from how the storage areas are configured, to how our team operates within the facility, and to how bottles are handled during retrieval and transport.

When we say your wine is protected from light, we mean it is stored in purpose-built professional conditions, not incidentally kept away from a window.

The Collection Management Dimension

Light damage is particularly insidious because it’s invisible until you open a bottle. There’s no discoloration visible through dark glass. No pushed cork or immediate signs of any way that light affects wine. The only signal is in the glass, and by then, it’s often too late.

This is one of the reasons serious collectors use professional storage rather than storing at home. A basement that feels cool and dark may still be subject to seasonal light exposure, window proximity, or the kind of irregular lighting that occurs when people visit their cellars. Professional facilities remove all of that uncertainty.

Our collection management platform gives you real-time visibility into your stored collection while keeping the bottles themselves in optimal conditions. You can view your cellar in detail, request delivery, and even list bottles for resale through our Christie’s integration, all without ever compromising the storage environment your wine depends on.

Ready to Store Your Collection Properly?

Currently storing wine at home or with a facility that doesn’t prioritize these conditions? We’d be glad to talk through what professional storage looks like for your collection. We serve clients throughout the greater New York metro area from our Bronx facility and throughout Connecticut and surrounding counties from our Stratford, CT location.
