May 8, 2024 Update
We have some much-anticipated updates to our 2023 Bordeaux vintage report. Below these updates, you can find our original, unedited post from April 2024.
Bordeaux 2023 Vintage Overview
Bordeaux Vintage Analysis
Discussions of a vintage in Bordeaux used to focus on weather conditions and their impact on wine quality. However, this approach is no longer adequate as Bordeaux is increasingly defined by financial resources and the willingness to put in extra effort during challenging conditions. In 2023, the overall temperatures throughout the growing season were lower compared to 2022 (even though it was the hottest summer on record for the rest of France). The resulting wines, both reds and whites, have lower alcohol levels, with reds mostly coming in at around 13%.
Left Bank Preference
Based on what we have gleaned, the Left Bank performed slightly better than the Right Bank in 2023; the Cabernets benefited from the heat spike in late August, while the mildew inducing rain and hot spells throughout June, July and August posed a challenge for Merlot due to its mildew sensitivity.
New Cellars & Smaller Fermentation Tanks
Many chateaux have invested in new cellars over the last 15 years. This is significant because the move towards smaller fermentation tanks allows vineyard managers to pick with greater precision. Previously, when larger tanks were used, more volume was needed to fill the tanks and quality was sometimes jeopardized.
Focus on Next Level of Châteaux
Larger Châteaux groups that have invested in improvements to their Grand Vin are now giving more attention to their next level of châteaux; Duhart Milon (Domaines Barons de Rothschild (Lafite)) is a prime example.
High Quality Appellations
Appellations that stand out the most in 2023 because of their high level of quality and overall consistency: Saint-Estèphe, Margaux and Sauternes and Barsac (the latter two will be epic!).
Quality in Pauillac and Saint-Julien
There are outstanding, beautiful wines from Pauillac and Saint-Julien, but not as many overachievers as from Saint-Estèphe and Margaux.
Pessac-Léognan Quality
In Pessac-Léognan, quality varies, but keep an eye out for Pape-Clément!
Price Rollback Request
Négociants asked Châteaux to roll back prices to 2019 levels and it appears that they have listened!

As wine enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the release of Bordeaux’s 2023 vintage, an interesting narrative unfolds behind the scenes, revealing the challenges and triumphs of this particular harvest. Situated within the heart of France’s renowned wine region, Bordeaux, the 2023 vintage showcases a compelling blend of resilience, adaptability, and the unyielding spirit of winemakers faced with Mother Nature’s unpredictable whims.
Temperature Fluctuations and Harvest Precautions
Between August 20th and 24th, temperatures soared, prompting some vineyards to initiate their harvest ahead of schedule, a strategic move aimed at safeguarding delicate white grapes from shriveling under the scorching sun. Despite this abrupt spike in temperatures, the overall climate throughout the growing season of 2023 presented a departure from the previous year of 2022. Interestingly, while temperatures soared temporarily, the overall climate trended cooler compared to its predecessor.
Initial fermentations offer an intriguing insight into the characteristics of the 2023 vintage. With alcohol levels in the white grapes registering lower this year, accompanied by higher natural acidities, anticipation builds for a vintage defined by its unique flavor profile and aromatic complexity.
Challenges in Vineyard Management
A perennial aspect of Bordeaux’s winemaking narrative lies in the meticulous management of vineyards, a task fraught with challenges and triumphs alike. The contrast between the number of vineyard treatments between vintages serves as a poignant reflection of the dynamic nature of winemaking.
In 2022, there were only four or five treatments due to the dry weather, resulting in minimal vineyard disease. However, this year saw a rise in treatments, typically ranging from 10 to 12. Unlike the previous year, there have been no irrigation demands, even during instances when it may have been necessary.Â

Navigating Mildew and Rot
The issue of mildew and rot stemming from the rainy and hot spells in June, July, and August posed a significant challenge. The risk of mildew rapidly spreading through a vineyard within a matter of days was particularly high at certain junctures. This proved to be a major issue for vineyards facing financial constraints, as they struggled to implement timely treatments. This predicament was widespread across all sectors of Bordeaux, leading to some estates being unable to salvage their crops.
Despite the pervasive threat of mildew, the indomitable spirit of Bordeaux’s winemakers shone through as they endeavored to salvage their crops. While some estates faced setbacks, the collective resolve of the region’s winemaking community underscores the resilience and adaptability that lie at the heart of Bordeaux’s winemaking tradition.
Cabernet Dominance
Given Merlot’s susceptibility to mildew compared to Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, the 2023 vintage is poised to be dominated by Cabernet, a testament to the varietal’s resilience in the face of challenging conditions. This shift underscores the importance of diligence and adaptability in navigating the ever-evolving landscape of winemaking, reaffirming Bordeaux’s status as a beacon of excellence in the world of fine wines.
Cellaring Potential of the Bordeaux 2023 Vintage
The Bordeaux 2023 vintage holds significant promise for cellaring, offering wine lovers the opportunity to experience its evolution over time. With its unique characteristics shaped by the challenges and triumphs of the harvest, these wines are poised to develop complexity and depth with proper aging. While the dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc in this vintage suggests wines with robust tannic structure and longevity, the lower alcohol levels and higher natural acidities observed in the white grapes hint at a potential for graceful aging and preservation of vibrant fruit flavors.
As with any Bordeaux vintage, careful cellaring in optimal conditions—cool, dark, and humidity-controlled—will be paramount to unlocking the full potential of these wines. Whether enjoyed in their youth or patiently cellared for years to come, the Bordeaux 2023 vintage promises to reward discerning collectors with wines of exceptional character and pedigree.

The Bordeaux 2023 vintage shows us a compelling narrative of resilience, adaptability, and the unwavering commitment of winemakers to craft exceptional wines despite the formidable challenges posed by nature. As wine enthusiasts eagerly anticipate the release of this distinctive vintage, they can toast to the indomitable spirit of Bordeaux’s winemaking tradition, a testament to the enduring legacy of craftsmanship and innovation that defines this illustrious wine region.
