A highly anticipated bottle in the 2019 Bordeaux Futures release, the 2019 Clos Du Clocher Pomerol is already receiving impressive reviews and favorable feedback. Today we’re examining this vintage and exploring Clos Du Clocher, a producer whose wines can be particularly hard to come by but are excellent to enjoy.
This vintage is full, deep, and extremely aromatic with complementary notes of florals, black fruits, and spices.
From James Suckling: “Aromas of blackberries, plums, peppercorns, walnuts and toasted bread. It’s medium-to full-bodied with firm, silky tannins. Excellent freshness with a delicious, creamy and spicy finish. 75% merlot and 25% cabernet franc. Drink after 2024.”

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2019 Clos du Clocher needs a little coaxing to reveal subtle scents of black raspberries, kirsch and wild blueberries, before a drop-dead gorgeous perfume of candied violets, cinnamon stick, clove oil, Darjeeling tea and star anise take center stage. The medium to full-bodied palate is very finely knit, with ripe, plush tannins and seamless freshness supporting the elegant flavors, finishing long and fragrant. – Lisa Perrotti-Brown, June 18, 2020
Lots of dark fruit and chocolate with blackberry and walnut character. It’s full-bodied with round, chewy tannins and a flavorful finish. Some earth, too. – June 3, 2020
The 2019 Clos Du Clocher was closed and backward aromatically, yet has beautiful richness and depth on the palate, with pure cassis and black raspberry fruit, ripe, present tannins, a good sense of freshness and purity, and a great finish. It’s going to be a serious Pomerol that will benefit from short-term cellaring yet drink nicely for two decades. – June 11, 2020
The 2019 Clos du Clocher is a wonderfully complete and expressive wine. Lifted aromatics lead into a core of inky dark fruit, with beams of tannin that give the wine shape as well as energy. There is a sense of vibrancy to the 2019 that I find very appealing. Hints of lavender, sage, mint and licorice add pretty top notes to round things out. Jean-Baptiste Audy purchased the vineyard that would become Clos du Clocher in 1924. It is still family-owned, and has produced several top-rated vintages in recent years. The terroir is outstanding, even for Pomerol, with grapes displaying complexity and intensity. The final blends for their wines are selected in collaboration with Clos du Clocher and Michel Rolland’s team, and are always layered with unique and interesting characteristics.
Bordeaux is the largest AOC vineyard in France, home to 54 appellations of Bordeaux wine. Known for its high-quality terroirs, Bordeaux offers distinct flavors but has a wide variety of price points and producers. Red Bordeaux Blends are generally made from a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Malbec grapes. According to the region’s official website, “Our diverse appellations and crus/wines represent a broad palette of climates, soil types, and grape varieties.”
